COMPRESSION THERAPY

Normatec in Willis, TX

Normatec is an advanced form of intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) therapy that uses dynamic air pressure to rhythmically compress the limbs. The system mimics the body’s natural muscle pump, helping move blood and lymphatic fluid back toward the heart.

Unlike static compression (like socks), Normatec delivers sequential, pulsed compression, creating a “milking” effect that enhances circulation and fluid movement.

THE BENEFITS

MANY CLIENTS REPORT

Recovery & Performance

•   Reduces muscle soreness and fatigue

•   Accelerates recovery between workouts

•   Supports improved range of motion and flexibility

•   Enhances perceived recovery and readiness

•   Improved circulation

•  Decreased pain and stiffness

Recovery & Performance

•  Increases blood flow and oxygen delivery

•  Promotes lymphatic drainage and fluid removal

•  Reduces swelling and inflammation

Wellness & Relaxation

•   Decreases muscle tension

•   Encourages parasympathetic state

•   Provides a massage- like experience

Sequential compression helps flush metabolic waste and improve circulation, contributing to faster recovery and reduced soreness.

Clinical Applications

Normatec Therapy is widely used in both medical and performance settings:

PAIN | MUSCULOKSELETAL

•   Post-exercise recovery

•   Post-surgical or injury recovery

•   Long travel recovery

•   Chronic muscle tightness

NERVOUS SYSTEM

•   Leg heaviness and fatigue

•  Nervous system dysregulation

CIRCULATION | METABOLISM

•   Venous insufficiency

•   Swelling (edema)

•   Lymphatic stagnation

WELLNESS

•  General relaxation

•  Massage-like experience

•  Stress relief

How it works

  • The Science

Normatec uses intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC)—a well-established medical technology.

    Mechanism of Action:

    Sequential Compression

Air chambers inflate from distal → proximal (feet → thighs), pushing fluid upward.

    Pressure Gradient

Higher pressure distally, lower proximally—mimicking natural circulation.

    Venous & Lymphatic Return

Enhances movement of blood and lymph, reducing pooling and edema.

    Tissue Perfusion

Improves delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues.

    Massage-like Effect

Acts similarly to mechanical massage, promoting relaxation and recovery.

  • How Often

    Frequency depends on your goals:

    General Wellness:

    1–2 sessions per week

    Athletic Recovery / High Activity:

    2–5 sessions per week

    Often post-workout or same-day

    Injury Recovery / Swelling:

May be used more frequently (as directed by your provider)

Sessions of 20–30 minutes at moderate pressure are commonly used in research protocols

  • What to Expect

What to Expect During a Session

    • You’ll relax in a comfortable chair or table
    • Compression sleeves (legs, hips, or arms) are applied
    • Session lasts 20–30 minutes (typical protocol)
    • Gentle pulsing pressure cycles through the limbs
    • Intensity is adjustable and customized

Most patients describe the experience as:

    • Deeply relaxing
    • Rhythmic and massage-like
    • Non-painful and calming
  • Safety

Normatec is safe for most individuals, but should NOT be used without medical clearance if you have:

    Absolute / Strong Contraindications

    • Active or suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
    • Severe peripheral arterial disease
    • Acute infection or cellulitis in the limb
    • Uncontrolled congestive heart failure
    • Recent fracture or unstable injury

    Relative Precautions

    • Neuropathy or impaired sensation
    • Severe diabetes with vascular complications
    • Pregnancy (consult provider)
    • Open wounds (unless medically managed)

Compression therapy works by mobilizing fluid and blood—so proper screening is important.
